Steps To Build A Strong Support System in Recovery

Importance of Having A Support System During Recovery

During the time that you’re in alcohol or drug addiction treatment, you will learn several things about yourself that you may not have recognized in the past. This is just one of the reasons why collaborating with a team at an experienced drug addiction treatment center is critical in your overall recovery. Before you can begin this process, however, it’s possible that you may need to commit to an alcohol or drug detox program. There are countless people who are struggling with drug or alcohol addiction who don’t realize that within just a few hours from the time that they stop taking their drug or drink of choice, they will begin to experience withdrawal symptoms that can make it all but impossible for them to care for themselves. A drug detox program provides you with the type of environment and the support system that you need to receive the help and care that you need as you begin to experience these withdrawal symptoms. On average, drug detox typically lasts approximately one week. After that time, you can truly commit to one of the treatment programs at a facility that will help you to tackle your alcohol abuse or your drug abuse once and for all.

The next important decision that you will need to make is regarding which one of the treatment programs you will commit to at a drug and alcohol. In order to establish long-term recovery, it’s critical that you make the conscious decision that you are going to commit to every aspect of your drug rehab treatment. One of the forms of addiction treatment that you can commit to is inpatient rehab. Inpatient rehab is similar to drug detox or alcohol detox in the sense that you will have the opportunity to live on the campus of your treatment facility of choice. You will be able to start to develop recovery support systems with your treatment team because you will have around-the-clock access to them. One of the other benefits of inpatient rehab is that you will have a safe and sober environment during the recovery process. Substance abuse treatment can be challenging at times. Depending on the severity of your addiction, it’s possible that you may need that high level of care in order to manage certain aspects of your substance abuse treatment and so that you can take full advantage of the recovery support systems that you are putting in place.

If you have full-time or even part-time work or school responsibilities, then it may be impossible for you to work through an inpatient treatment program. This doesn’t mean that you will not be able to commit to an addiction treatment program, however. If you fall into this category, the best option for you may be an outpatient treatment program. An outpatient treatment program will provide you with the flexibility that you need to be able to see these other important responsibilities in your life. If your schedule changes or adjustments need to be made in your treatment plan, simply coordinate with your treatment team so that you can continue on in your recovery journey.

Ask For Support During Addiction Recovery

There are many substance abusers who struggle with the premise of asking for support during and after the time that they are in addiction treatment. The reason for this is that their relationships with their loved ones may have broken down during the time that they were in active addiction. As you’re working toward developing a healthy support system with your family and friends, one of the things that you may want to consider is inviting them to participate in family therapy with you. Family therapy is a form of addiction therapy that can help you to reconnect with your loved ones. Before you were in drug addiction treatment and during the time that you were in active addiction, it’s possible that your relationship with your family and friends may have fallen apart. However, this form of addiction therapy can help you to redevelop these important relationships once again so that you can develop a solid support system with these key people in your life. Although it may take several sessions of this form of addiction therapy to get there, feeling their love and support once again is something that can continue to motivate you.

Decide What Kind of Support You Need

Selecting the people that you would like to be in your system of support is important. For example, even though you may have a close relationship or friendship with a person, it doesn’t always mean that that relationship is a healthy one. For instance, if that person is struggling with their own addiction or they don’t believe that addiction is a disease, then they may negatively influence you and impact the progress that you are making in your own recovery.

This is one of the leading reasons why it’s strongly encouraged that you openly and honestly participate in the different forms of therapy that you will experience during your time in treatment. There are several different forms of counseling that you will experience throughout the course of your recovery. Individual therapy, for example, will help you to have the personal communication and interaction that you need to ensure that you are on the right path when it comes to your overall treatment.

Another type of therapy that will be extremely beneficial to you during your recovery is behavioral therapy. During the time that you were in active addiction, it’s highly probable that you picked up on behaviors that will not help you as you adjust to a life of sobriety. Behavioral therapy will not only help you to address these actions but will help you to avoid making these same behavioral mistakes going forward. This form of therapy is also particularly helpful for a person that may also be suffering from a mental health disorder such as anxiety or depression.

Attend Addiction Support Meetings

Communicating and interacting with other people that are working through their own recovery journey is one of the best things that you can do for yourself. One of the great things about Alcoholics Anonymous meetings or Narcotics Anonymous meetings is that these meetings take place at seemingly any time throughout the week. Even better, you can also take advantage of attending virtual meetings if you’re unable to get to a meeting in person. You can opt to attend a meeting that is closer to your phone or, if you don’t feel comfortable with that, you can attend a meeting in a completely different area.

Don’t Engage In Any New Relationships

One of the mistakes that many people make when it comes to their recovery journey is thinking that it would be beneficial to jump into new relationships. While it’s certainly helpful to develop new friendships, trying to develop new romantic relationships is something that could prove to actually set you back in many ways. Instead of focusing on the steps that you need to take to maintain your sobriety early on in your recovery, your focus would shift toward developing this new relationship which could prove to set you up for failure.

Trust The Recovery Journey

It’s important to understand that recovery is a journey. Also, it’s one that will last you for the rest of your life. During certain parts of that journey, you will have certain highs and lows. There will be certain things that you struggle with and there will be certain times when you may feel as though you aren’t moving fast enough throughout your recovery process.
