6 Sober Celebrities Talk About Their Struggles with Addiction

Addiction Among Celebrities

Addiction is an example of a disease that doesn’t discriminate. The disease doesn’t care about your race or what religion you follow and it certainly doesn’t care about how much money you have. In many cases, when a person gets into the stride of their career to the point where they are now defined as a “celebrity”, there is a unique spotlight that shines on them. Although there are people who wish they could be celebrities, the reality is that this spotlight is something that can be difficult for any person to manage. Here are some stories about 6 sober celebrities.

If you or a loved one are struggling with addiction, Pacific Manor Recovery can help. Call (888) 300-4370 to learn more.

Demi Lovato

Demetria Lovato is better known to her fans as simply Demi Lovato. She first came to fame as part of the cast of the kid-friendly show “Barney & Friends” between the years 2002 and 2004. However, she would cement herself as a celebrity over the next few years with hits not only in Hollywood but in the recording studio. She is best known for chart-topping hits such as “Skyscraper” and “Heart Attack”. Unfortunately, Demi is an example of a celebrity who struggled with her newfound fame in more than one way and would ultimately turn to a mix of drugs and alcohol to cope.

At just the tender age of 16, Demi developed an eating disorder as well as a pattern of self-harm. At 17 years old, Demi tried cocaine for the first time and since then she has struggled with a myriad of addiction and mental health issues. She would go on to reveal that in 2010 she first reached out for help for both her addiction as well as mental health issues and indicated that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

Although Demi did seek out treatment, she has struggled with a multitude of setbacks when it comes to her recovery journey. In June 2018, she revealed through her song, “Sober” that she had relapsed after six years. The following month, she was taken to the emergency room as a result of an opioid overdose. In recent years, Lovato has stated that she was raped at the age of 15 which may have been part of what led to her addiction issues. She still remains committed to maintaining her sobriety.

Ben Affleck

Ben Affleck’s career in Hollywood took off by leaps and bounds through starring in blockbusters such as “Good Will Hunting” as well as “Argo”. Affleck’s career also gained notoriety as both a producer and a director in a variety of different movies. However, Affleck’s family history of alcoholism would ultimately catch up to him. When Affleck was a child, he shared that he would attend Al-Anon meetings as a way to support his father who struggled with addiction issues. Both of his grandparents were alcoholics as well as an assortment of family members. In fact, his brother is also a recovering alcoholic.

At the age of 15, many around Affleck grew worried regarding his underage drinking. He would ultimately commit to becoming sober in his 20s and acknowledged that it was incredibly dangerous for him to be around alcohol. However, he has suffered from his own fair share of addiction setbacks as the years have gone by. Affleck also suffers from depression and anxiety which can have an impact on addiction. Sadly, he has suffered from public relapses, however, his friends and family have come to his aid to get him the help and the care that he needs. He encourages those that struggle with addiction to get the help that they need and to look at receiving help as a sign of courage, not something that you should be embarrassed by.

Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper is a household name as a result of starring in several well-known movies. His breakthrough role came during the success of “The Hangover”. The comedy would go on to produce two sequels in which Cooper would be known as a funny yet sexy Hollywood celebrity. Today, Cooper is probably best known for his role in “A Star is Born”. He starred alongside Lady Gaga as a musician who was spiraling out of control as a result of addiction.

What many people don’t realize, however, is how close art mimicked real life when it came to Cooper’s own life. In his late 20s, there was a possibility that Cooper could have completely derailed everything that he was trying to work so hard to build as a result of drug and alcohol abuse. He finally came to the realization that he would be able to have a successful career in Hollywood unless he gave up these toxic substances. As soon as he made this decision, his career ultimately took off and he never looked back.

Johnny Depp

Johnny Depp is known around the world for his incredible collection of award-winning films. From the “Pirates of the Caribbean” series to “Edward Scissorhands” to “Alice in Wonderland”, Depp has shown his fantastic acting skills. However, Depp has also struggled with different addictions throughout his life. At the age of 11, he started taking prescription medication that was prescribed to his mother, by 12 he was smoking, and by 14 he had expanded to taking every type of drug he could get his hands on. Ultimately, this would lead to an addiction to alcohol as well. Depp has gone back and forth when it comes to addiction recovery. He would have a substantial amount of years sober, however, there were always certain triggers that would negatively impact his sobriety. For instance, during his infamous relationship with Amber Heard, he went into a dark period of drug and alcohol abuse.

Kelly Osbourne

Kelly Osbourne is the daughter of famous rock star Ozzy Osbourne. Ozzy Osbourne struggled with his own fair share of addiction issues which, in turn, impacted his daughter. Osbourne developed an addiction to drugs and alcohol at a fairly early age. However, after a solid commitment to her mental and physical health, she would go on to enjoy years of sobriety. However, she recently admitted that she had relapsed as a result of alcohol. Osbourne, like many others that struggle with addiction, had convinced herself that she could easily manage a few drinks. However, within just a few days she was once again caught in the grips of addiction. Today, however, Osbourne is more committed than ever to her sobriety and wants to continue to live a healthy life.

Daniel Radcliffe

Daniel Radcliffe will always be known as “Harry Potter” in some way, shape, or form. He was the actor who, at a young age, brought the incredible wizard to life throughout the course of incredible movies which were seen by millions of people all over the world. However, the enormous success of the movies and the celebrity lifestyle that he was exposed to at such a young age would have its toll on Radcliffe as he continued to get older. In later years, Radcliffe would admit that he was drinking substantially during the final three films of the series. He came to the realization that if he continued on this path, he wouldn’t be able to do what he truly loved, which was an act. Radcliffe would ultimately quit drinking alcohol after the completion of the final film.
