Recognizing A High Functioning Alcoholic

What is a High-Functioning Alcoholic?

There is a common misconception regarding the disease of alcoholism. One of the reasons why addiction can come in many different forms is because there are many different types of alcoholics. While it’s true that there are some alcoholics whose day revolves around consuming alcohol, there are several others who are high-functioning alcoholics which means that they are able to perform certain tasks without anyone else realizing the true extent of their addiction.

If you or a loved one are struggling with addiction, Pacific Manor Recovery can help. Call (888) 300-4370 to learn more.

Breaking the Stereotype of What an Alcoholic “Looks Like”

Countless people have a certain stereotype of being associated with a person being an alcoholic. Many people believe that in order to be an alcoholic, you wouldn’t be able to perform any type of task without having a drink first. Others believe that an alcoholic is defined as a person who drinks around the clock, regardless of what time it is or that an alcoholic cannot hold down a job or maintain any type of relationship.

Although it’s true that many alcoholics present themselves in the ways that were just described, at its core, an alcoholic is defined as a person who is unable to control their drinking at any given point. There are some alcoholics who only drink after 5 pm because they are done with work while other alcoholics only drink on the weekends. Regardless of whether you’re a high-functioning alcoholic or whether you’re struggling with general alcohol addiction, it’s important that you reach out for help to overcome your substance abuse.

Signs and Symptoms of Alcohol Addiction

If you have suspicions that a loved one may be struggling with alcoholism, there are several signs and symptoms associated with the condition. Some examples include:

  • Struggling to maintain deadlines for work
  • Issues with not being able to live up to certain responsibilities
  • Anti-social tendencies
  • Problems with personal and professional relationships
  • Health issues
  • Secretiveness

Realistically, the signs of alcohol addiction are endless so if you need to speak in more detail about a possible addiction, a member of our team is always available.

Treatment Options for Alcohol Addiction

At Pacific Manor, we believe that it’s important to provide our clients with a multitude of options when it comes to treating alcohol addiction. For instance, many clients feel as though they need a safe and structured environment that only an inpatient treatment program can offer. If you decide to take advantage of this program, you will live on our campus during the course of your treatment, participate in different forms of therapy and have access to our excellent treatment team whenever you need them.

Some clients are unable to commit to an inpatient alcohol treatment program because of other responsibilities that they have or they are interested in continuing on with a program after their inpatient program. If you fall into this category, you would be the perfect candidate for one of our outpatient programs. An outpatient program provides you with more flexibility in the sense that you can still receive the care that you need but you will be able to go home at the end of your treatment day or attend work or school.
